Adding Solar Panels To Your Home

Posted on

Going green does not mean you have to build a new home. You can remodel your current home to be more energy efficient by hiring an electrician to install solar panels. You will need to make an initial financial investment, but adding the panels will benefit you in various positive ways.

After you have your solar panels installed, you will be using far less electricity from the local grid. In fact, at times, you may produce more electricity than your home needs. In some instances, you will be able to sell your excess electricity back to the grid. This process is called net metering, but you need to check and make sure the process is available from your local electricity provider. In any event, you will be saving money on your fuel bills.

Carbon Footprint

Although solar panels do not eliminate your need for carbon fuels, they do greatly reduce your home's footprint. After all, solar power is constantly renewable, and using the sun helps reduce the world's dependence on fossil fuels. In addition, solar panels produce more than enough power in just five years to replace what was used to create them.

Low Maintenance

Once you have your system installed, you will have to do very little to keep it running smoothly. The panels need to be cleaned a few times a year, but repairs are few since there are no moving parts. Every five to ten years, the inverter will need to be replaced. This piece is the hardest working part because it is responsible for the conversion of sunlight into electricity. Fortunately, most solar systems are covered by a 20 - 25 year warranty, meaning your expenses are almost nothing after the initial investment.

When you hire a contractor to install your panels, you need to find out how much experience they have with PV (photovoltaic) systems. Make sure they are certified to do this type of work and also check out their business history, the way you would with any contractor. You definitely want an experienced and quality electrician to do this important work for you.

You do not need to build a new house to take advantage of solar power. You can install solar panels and begin to save money on your electric bill almost immediately. In some instances, you may be able to sell your excess electrical production. Your panels will benefit the environment while they help you financially.
